Heu und Stroh: ein Beitrag zur Kultur- und Kunstgeschichte. Linz: Veritas, 1990, p. 155. Index Words: bales, stacks, architecture Place: Italy Notes: ^^^ Another perspective on the columnar balestacks in ID 1769 shows even more clearly both their resemblance to house-forms and the way they are constructed. The smaller, square bales are piled on top of the round ones, and the loose material which forms the thatch is held in place by thin poles. A conversation with the farmer who created this impressive hybrid discouraged Sotriffer from expecting the style to survive: 'Waren Sie im kommenden Jahr gekommen, hatten Sie hier nichts mehr aufnehmen konnen... wir werden es jetzt machen wie die anderen.' (We assume that this is Sotriffer's German, not that of the Umbrian stack architect, however ingenious!) Essays:
