Index Words:  haystacks, storm
Place:  Massachusetts
Notes:  One of Heade's contributions to the grand American Sublime exhibition which toured in 2002. (The other was the more famous 1859 sea-shore painting Approaching Thunder Storm.) This was the first of Heade's hay images to come to my attention. Little did I know that there would be over one hundred more. The Tate description of this work is worth quoting in its entirety: 'The weather plays an important role in Heade's paintings of the salt marshes of the New England coast. The land seems permanent, unchanging in its purpose and appearance, while the sky is constantly altered. This provides a chronological dimension that reminds us that, in fact, even the land suffers change, and that the apparently eternal haystacks will disappear under the impact of new ways of life and farming technology. Here the interplay of sun and shower is mirrored in the strong contrasts of light and shade across the marsh, so that one foreground haystack is in deep shadow while distant ones are bathed in sunshine.'
