Notes:  ^^^ The color reproduction in Stebbins is sharp enough to show not just the usual Heade passages of light and shadow,and sun and storm, but unusual detail, such as the poles which hold the tops of the stacks together and a rare horizon line of waves breaking on a beach. See Stebbins (p.124) for commentary on Heade's modification of the actual topography and the political (conservationist) implications of his changes.
