Image: ID: 198 Artist: Heade, Martin Johnson Artist Birth Date: 1819 Artist Death Date: 1904 Artist Country: American Title of Work: Salt marsh hay Date of Work: 1866-1876 Medium: oil Period/Style: nineteenth century URL: http://www.butlerart.com/pc_book/pages/martin_johnson_heade_1819.htm Citation: Stebbins, Theodore. The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade: A Critical Analysis and Catalogue Raisonne, cat. 149. Index Words: haystacks Place: Massachusetts Notes: ^^^ The background sky is dark and threatening, but the largest stack, just left of center glows from an unusually frontal light which is also reflected in the shadowy meander in the foreground. The Butler Institute description captures the scene in prose as melodramatic as Heade's illumination: 'the black mirror reflection in the middle of the composition...increases our sense of an almost surreal world held in a tension of oppositions about to shatter in noise and light. Where Heade's marshes before and after this period were painted in cool greens and yellows, and either bright sparkling daylight or dreamy twilights, here he purposefully exploits impenetrable blacks, acid greens, and ghostly whites.'
