The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade: A Critical Analysis and Catalogue Raisonne, cat. 185 and p.120 [color]. Index Words: haystacks, fog Place: United States Notes: ^^^ Seen at the newly opened De Young Museum in San Francisco, October, 1995. The reproduction in Stebbins gives the impression of an epic panorama, but the original painting is modest enough to share two-deep wall-space with another Heade. The monumental stacks are more crowded than usual. They seem to float on their staddles above the high water which carries a small boat occupied by two men. The stacks recede into the fog through which the sun gleams distantly. Essays: Marsh hay poems of John Frederic Herbin.
