| Notes: | ^^^ Breton's famous painting has been criticized for its chaotic composition and lighting, and its uneven spatial recession and inconsistent scale. We might add that the 'haystacks' are obviously of grain sheaves. Nevertheless, the disconnected elements are full of drama, and, however large the crowd, there is a sense of helplessness in the tiny amount of water being tipped on the throughly convincing fire. Evidently Breton pioneered the use of photographs in capturing individual incidents; this method may explain the fragmentary nature of the whole. |
