Image: ID: 464 Artist: Breton, Jules Artist Birth Date: 1827 Artist Death Date: 1906 Artist Country: French Title of Work: Fire in a haystack Date of Work: 1856 Medium: oil Period/Style: nineteenth century URL: http://www.kingsgalleries.com/1024x768/galleries/breton/expanded/picture-12.htm Citation: Art in America v69 (September 1981) p.140. Index Words: haystack, fire Place: France Notes: ^^^ Breton's famous painting has been criticized for its chaotic composition and lighting, and its uneven spatial recession and inconsistent scale. We might add that the 'haystacks' are obviously of grain sheaves. Nevertheless, the disconnected elements are full of drama, and, however large the crowd, there is a sense of helplessness in the tiny amount of water being tipped on the throughly convincing fire. Evidently Breton pioneered the use of photographs in capturing individual incidents; this method may explain the fragmentary nature of the whole. Essays:

The lark itself is a tiny mark on the sunset. Essays:
Image: ID: 467 Artist: Breton, Jules Artist Birth Date: 1827 Artist Death Date: 1906 Artist Country: French Title of Work: Return from the fields in a boat on the river Date of Work: Medium: oil Period/Style: nineteenth century URL: http://www.kingsgalleries.com/1024x768/galleries/breton/expanded/picture-67.htm Citation: Index Words: hay-boat, woman child, sunset, hayfield Place: France Notes: ^^^ A modest boat carries a family and a small heap of hay homeward past a recently mowed meadow with haycocks. Breton invests gentle drama in the contrast between the three figures: the man pushing the pole, the woman slumped forward over the baby in her arms, and the child drifting her fingers in the water. The two under construction from horse-drawn wagon loads are ambiguous. Each of the latter has four men on the stack and one on the wagon, but it is unclear whether they are forking sheves or loose bundles. Essays:

The stacks being built will keep the draft animals alive. Essays:
