Index Words: haycart, horses, haycocks, workers, rake, fork Place: England Notes: ^^^ The primary subject of Gainsborough's 1755 landscape is a peasant straddling a white draft-horse, whose back also supports the nose of a chestnut companion. Both horses stand in the shade of a large tree which dominates the composition. But in the middle ground on the right is a wonderfully executed haying scene. One man heaves a large forkful to another high above him on a heavily loaded, two-wheeled cart. The horse harnessed to the cart leans down to eat from a mound of hay. A man with rake on shoulder stands by another haycock to the far right. The rendition of the soft, green hay is worthy of Bruegel. Essays:
